“Life is a pilgrimage, but sometimes it takes a pilgrimage to discover life.”
Kailash mansarovar Trek from Zhang Zhung Southern Gate is an amazing trek to Kailash region which goes through the very famous Zhang Zhung Southern Gate. The elevation of Mt. Kailash is 6714m. In the distant past, the nation called Zhang Zhung was acknowledged as a great kingdom all the way through the Orient. Other empires have left behind ruins that have been dug up as evidence of their existence but because Zhang Zhung was essentially an itinerant civilization a small amount of traces of its physical presence linger. The history of Zhang Zhung, however, has been conserved in both Bon and Buddhist ethnicity.
The whole of Tibet in ancient times was known as the Zhang Zhung. Zhang Zhung is the source of Tibetan culture and history. The capital center of Zhang Zhung was Kailash mansarovar region which is still unknown where its lies. Humla’s Lapcha valley is known as Zhang Zhung southern Gate. All Buddhist people of Humla came to Nepal using Lapcha La pass with their family God “Pholha”, ancient Zhang Zhung culture, Yaks and sheep folks 19 generation before. Now tourist cannot enter from exact Zhang Zhung southern gate to Tibet except Humla’s Shamanic God only. Canny Karnali traders therefore had extra rice from Achham and salt from Tibet. It seemed as dependable as the sunrise in the east the land of salt was the north, Tibet, and the land of provisions was the Achham plains. It seemed as if the salt traders would tread this loop forever. The promises all parties involved made, the lengths they went to ensure trust and reliability created an aura around Tibetan salt that is evident even today. The Nyinbas of Humla still keep a wooden box full of old Tibetan salt in the most sacred room of their house dedicated to the family god. Humli Khyampa “Duluwa” people, who are now settled in Bajura are still reluctant to use the iodized salt distributed in Martadi. They continue to use salt from the Tibetan plateau. As a matter of course, the farmers from the south who barter their red rice and barley and salt traders in Tibet establish ritual friendships with people they deal with, sealed with a vow to Mt Kailash and the holy mansarovar Lake. This pact on mutual objects of faith ensured there was no treachery or distrust. Our Journey route follows the same route of Salt traders’ in Upper Humla to Mt. Kailash.
