Overview

Located in the central west of the country, the focal point of the area is the Shey Phoksundo National Park. In comparison to Lower Dolpa, fewer trekkers enter the heavily restricted upper Dolpa section of Shey Phoksundo National Park. The main attraction of the area is the wild and pristine landscape. Geographically, it is similar to the Tibetan Plateau and is generally dry, cold, and sparsely vegetated.

To reach Dolpo, one must pass through the challenging Jangla Bhanjyang Pass, situated at an altitude of 4500m. Once beyond the pass, a magnificent sight awaits—snow-capped peaks and the vast expanse of the deserted Tibetan plateau. Protected from the rain, this region possesses a unique charm, with Dolpo’s inhabitants surviving and thriving through trade with neighboring Tibet.

The ultimate destination of this remarkable trek is the enchanting Phokshindo (Ringmo) and the legendary monastery of the pre-Buddhist Bonpo sect. It is a vision of beauty and a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the area. This trek is reserved for those with a true spirit of adventure, seeking to immerse themselves in the rugged and awe-inspiring landscapes of Nepal.

With its remote and untouched allure, Upper Dolpa offers a sense of exclusivity and a glimpse into a world where nature reigns supreme. Trekking through this region is a remarkable journey that unveils the raw beauty of the Himalayas and leaves a lasting impression on every adventurous soul who ventures into its realm.
