Dolpa, a region that became part of Nepal two centuries ago, holds significant historical and cultural importance. It served as a sanctuary for Tibetans fleeing the Chinese occupation of Tibet in 1959, thanks to shared blood and religious ties. Nestled amidst towering mountains, the people of Dolpa face economic and cultural challenges resulting from their separation from Tibet. It shares similarities with Ladakh, Zanskar, Lahul, and Spiti in India, as well as its neighboring region of Mustang in eastern Nepal.

The stunning landscapes of Dolpa are adorned with ancient Buddhist monasteries, some dating back a thousand years, found in the Shey and Ban Tshang Valleys.
