Overview

Nyinba Valley in Upper Humla is a region of great cultural and natural significance. The communities residing in this area, such as the Jadan, have a unique way of life shaped by their environment and traditions. The Jadan people are part of different sub-ethnic groups like Limi, Yultshodun, Trugchulung, Nyinba, and Tsangba.

Traditionally, the Jadan practiced fraternal polyandry, a form of marriage where multiple brothers marry the same woman. This practice aimed to manage population growth and distribute resources in a land of limited availability. However, over time, societal changes have led to a transition toward monogamy.

The livelihood of these communities primarily relies on farming, livestock herding, and trade. Due to the challenging terrain and high-altitude meadows, agriculture alone is not sufficient for sustenance. As a result, they engage in trade, especially in salt from Tibet, which they barter for grains from the lowland areas of Nepal. This unique lifestyle reflects their ability to adapt and thrive in challenging circumstances.

The cultural heritage of Nyinba Valley is rich and steeped in ancient traditions. The valley is home to Mt. Shelmo Kang, considered the holiest peak in Humla. According to local beliefs, Mt. Shelmo Kang is the sister of three other sacred mountains: Mt. Kailash, Mt. Lapchi, and Mt. Tsari. These peaks hold immense spiritual significance and have been revered by followers of Buddhism and other faiths for centuries.

The Nyinba Valley is a place where Buddhist and Hindu influences coexist. During the winter months, the inhabitants practice Hindu rituals, while in summer, they embrace their Buddhist heritage. This harmonious blending of traditions is akin to the nature of the region itself, where the grass in summer transforms into a worm in winter, known as “Yartsa-gunbu.”
