Overview
“Best journeys answer questions that in the beginning you didn’t even think to ask.”
Overland Journey from Chengdu to Lhasa via Kham provides you with the raw wilderness of Chengdu and Lhasa. It also presents you with one of the most energizing trekking experiences of your life. Sichuan-Tibet Highway (called Kangzang Road before renamed) is the longest high-altitude road in China at present. It was built from April 1950 to December 1954. Starting from Chengdu of Sichuan to Lhasa of Tibet, it is part of G318 (Shanghai to Zhangmu). The overland route from Chengdu to Lhasa goes through some of the most rugged and beautiful terrain of the eastern Tibetan Plateau.
Our journey across the heart of Kham to Lhasa, the “Holy City” follows ancient mule caravan trade routes. Starting at Dartsedo, our gateway & border post with China, we skirt our way along the Sichuan-Tibet Highway through mountainous terrain & river valleys to the historical towns of Tawu, Kanze, Dege & Chamdo. You can travel from Chengdu to Lhasa by road if you are in Sichuan province. Chengdu is the hometown of Giant Pandas. Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is the greatest place to watch the real pandas. You can visit the different facilities for the giant panda’s fodder room, sleeping quarters, and medical station. Glaciated peaks, evergreen forests, crystal clear rivers, glacier-fed lakes, and traditional Tibetan culture are all found along this route. Though this route can be done by using public transportation, having a private vehicle will allow you to see this region up close and at your own pace. There is a lot to see and do along this route so don’t rush through this area. On the trip, we will pay to visit remote monasteries and search out the thousands of different blooming medicinal herbals throughout the Kham region. You will start your trip in Chengdu and go to Ya’an, which is the main gateway to Tibet and China. The East Tibetan plateau is an immensely mysterious yet beautiful land. A lot of snow peaks, grasslands, Tibetan villages, and monasteries are well preserved, traditionally known as the Kham Tibet region. Ending at the capital, Lhasa, we will visit the fabulous Potala Palace, the Jokhang Temple, The Drepung Monastery, and the Sera Monastery’s Tibetan Buddhism philosophy debating. In our itinerary, we shall start our great overland adventure from Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province, and end at Zhangmu.
For the most part, the highway is rugged and winding. During the rainy season, the mountainside often caves in, sending down mudslides that block the road. Generally, the period of April to October is regarded as the best season for traveling to Lhasa. You don’t need previous experience but a positive attitude and endurance to complete this journey.
