Overview

Royal Bardia National Park, located in Nepal’s Western Terai, is the largest park in the lowland Terai region, covering an expansive area of 968 square kilometers. The primary objective of the park is to protect and conserve diverse ecosystems and ensure the survival of the endangered tiger and its prey species.

The park’s history dates back to 1976 when a small area was designated as the Royal Karnali Wildlife Reserve. This initial step towards conservation led to the resettlement of approximately 1,500 people from the Babai Valley, allowing the vegetation and wildlife to thrive. In 1982, the reserve was renamed the Royal Bardia Wildlife Reserve, and in 1984, it was expanded to its current size.

Recognizing its significance, the area was granted the status of a National Park in 1988. As part of conservation efforts, Greater One-horned Rhinoceros were translocated from Royal Chitwan National Park in 1986, 1991, and 1999 to ensure their population growth and distribution.

In 1997, a buffer zone surrounding the park, spanning an area of 327 square kilometers, was established. This buffer zone comprises forests and private lands and is jointly managed by the park authorities and local communities. Through collaborative efforts, community development initiatives are undertaken, and natural resources in the buffer zone are managed sustainably.

The Royal Bardia National Park is renowned for its rich biodiversity and offers a habitat for various species, including the iconic Greater One-horned Rhinoceros, Bengal Tigers, elephants, deer, crocodiles, and a multitude of bird species. Visitors to the park can explore its diverse landscapes, from dense forests to grasslands, and engage in activities like wildlife safaris, bird watching, and cultural encounters with the indigenous Tharu communities.

The park’s commitment to conservation, coupled with community involvement, ensures the preservation of this precious natural heritage for future generations to appreciate and enjoy.
